Our research, “Eliminating Latency in Remote Music Performance: A Browser-Based Synchronization System for Music Education,” was presented as a poster at the 2026 NAfME Biennial Music Research and Teacher Education Conference.

The conference, hosted by the National Association for Music Education, took place September 30 – October 3, 2026, at the Hilton Long Beach in Long Beach, California.

NAfME 2026 poster, 'Eliminating Latency in Remote Music Performance: A Browser-Based Synchronization System for Music Education' by Lance Glasser, Ph.D. It shows an SATB choir singing together across Los Angeles, Canberra and Melbourne, more than 8,000 miles apart, with a timing difference equivalent to standing fewer than 20 feet apart. It notes that Lyrekos works over Wi-Fi, on mobile, and even over Starlink, and that it runs in the browser with no app and no special hardware.

What the research covers

The research presents Lyrekos as a browser-based system for synchronized remote music performance, with a focus on its applications for music education. Topics include:

  • Why network latency makes traditional video conferencing tools unsuitable for ensemble music
  • The synchronization approach Lyrekos uses to sidestep the physical latency limits of the internet
  • Practical applications for remote choir rehearsal, one-on-one lessons, and ensemble teaching
  • Observations from early educator users running real sessions

For background on the underlying problem, see Why Zoom Fails for Music. For a hands-on walkthrough of how an Organizer runs a session, see The Lyrekos Quick Start Guide.
